Pillars

Pillars

For the brilliant women in my life who are my constant supporters. The ones who love me well, and teach me, one by one, the many attributes of Jesus.

I have held my elbows
against my body
two small apples
like what used to fall
from a tree in the backyard
in the house I grew up in

The bees practiced thanksgiving there

Once I made a sewing machine
of a bee
with my heel

The land mine clover
where even beauty can be a small death

This week a tour bus came
across my forehead and down my spine
the guide pointing out scars
apprehensions
rubble from the two earthquakes
and the pillars

I hadn’t noticed the pillars
in a while

They look like
my rib bones
femurs
scapula

But they are women
